Well I keep the excess hair between the toes clipped down below the pads, the extra hair can make create a bit of a slide for them. Also Musher's is great at helping to prevent ice balls. --

Of course, I have to explain the clippers to the dogs everytime I take them out. I actually found turning them on and holding them on their heads between their ears has a calming effect and they let me use them...too bad that doesn't work on cats, husbands, and with nail clippers....<sigh>
