Charlotte, Did the vet do skin scrapings for mange?  Was there a 
diagnosis?  If you suspect the skin condition was from poor care, diet, 
etc and even if Demodex was the diagnosis and is now cleared, the 
treatment should come from within.  A good quality dog food, possibly 
grain free and multi vitamins, Salmon oil and Vit E should help promote 
good skin and help the coat grow back. It does take a bit for the thyroid 
meds to get the dog regulated and it sounds like this dog was in dire 
health.
