Re: [pyrnet] Evaluating puppies

I've been breeding for years and I don't evaluate my pups at 8 weeks. Surely not
permanently.  Really too young. If pups at that age have *clear* problems.  Bad
bites, REALLY bad east/west fronts, I may be ready to alter them.  If I have x
numbers of people who want pets and I have to decide who stays and who goes
beyond that, I may chose which I think are "better".  Making end point choices
is a long process.  In some cases I have kept a dog months.  Or I have kept two
until I decded between them.  I also think that there are people who have NO
idea of how to evaluate pups doing exactly that.  At any age.

Thank you Linda.  You said exactly what I meant to say about the experienced breeders making the spay/neuter choices instead of "those people" like us who have merely made a breed decision about the dog they want/need.
While I'm familiar with breeds that I have owned over the years, I am in no way qualified to select a show quality breeding dog (and don't want to become a breeder) so Ombre was spayed to avoid the hassle of a female dog in season.  The breeder was well aware of our intentions, so we assume that her decision for her pup was the correct one; whether every breeder in the world agrees with it or not.
I really didn't mean to start a debate (on what seems to be a touchy subject) when I mentioned that we had had her spayed.  Sorry if any offense was caused.
