Re: [pyrnet] Re: pyrproofing

As far as sweets go, our 140 lb Newf (Zeus) loved chocolate and I *really* indulged him. It wasnât until a month or two after Zeus passed that my husband told me that chocolate can be potentially toxic for dogs. We put Zeus down (due to natural causes) a few weeks shy of his 14th birthday.

I donât feed Kodi much table food butâ

Our Pyr Kodi likes the white cheeses. The only way I could justify eating the rest of some yummy leftover pizza blanca (white pizza) was to share it with Kodi. I only like the bread part so I gave Kodi the topping. When my husband came home from work a few hours later, he said, âHow come Kodiâs breath smells like garlic?â

Our Boomer once ate the entire tray of muffins from Samâs Club â including the cardboard and plastic wrapping.

I am surprised how many pyrs have a taste for baked goods.  My first pyr, Jascha, loved bread.  Cheese bread was his favorite.  He rarely condescended to regular Pepperidge Farm sandwich bread, had to be the good homemade or better bakery stuff.  As he got way older, arthritic and blind, I would sometimes leave a loaf on the counter just to see how he was doing.  If it disa-pyr-ed, he was ok, if not he really was not feeling well and needed a vet visit.

My female, Sweetie, looks to be an angel but she is the current counter cruiser.  Very clever girl, but if the boys are in the crates and she is the only one loose, it is obvious who the culprit is.  Loves the couch too.  Sheâll fluff  up the pillows so she has a head rest and can stretch from one end to the other.   Ikea sells washable slip covers for their couches so I have two sets.

My Inka LOVES cobbler and we found out in a similar way.  And brownies, oatmeal cookies and cereal.   I have never had a dog with a sweet tooth before.  Oh, and she eats out of cereal boxes too, if they are not closed properly.

Last week she learned to open drawers and ate 4 of the six bagels in the bag.  I make her good food so it is not as if she is starved.  I think it is the thrill of the hunt.....

i have 5 dogs- 2 greyhounds and 2 borzoi as well as my pyr.  I also have ScatMats which have electric charges and are designed to keep the dogs out of the dining room.  All 4 hounds will never step on the mats, having done it ONCE and learned the lesson.  My pyr usually won't go in the room, HOWEVER, if there is something he feels he truly needs in there, well... One example was the berry cobbler I made and set in the dining room to cool.  My pyr has a sweet tooth and I thought it would be safe from him in there with the ScatMat.  Nope, he braved the shock and stepped on it anyway while I was out of the house, pulled the cobbler off the dining room table and ate the whole thing.  To his credit there was not a stain on him or on the carpet and the only way I knew for sure it was him was the tuft of white fur he left behind on the carpet.  He never stops amazing me!
