Keith.
We live in
coyote heaven. The Prys know they are there before we do; and I believe it
is by scent, and for sure by sound. If the Pyrs are sleeping in the
house at night, and the coyotes start to scream, it is chaos until we let them
outside to make sure everything is OK. The Pyrs will patrol the fence line and
not stop barking until the coyotes have quieted and moved out of the area.
All too often, however, there are multiple coyote packs which are communicating
with each other over a distance, and this lends itself to quite the
communication between the packs and the Pyrs. You cannot even coax the Pyrs with
venison sausage to get them back in the house when coyotes are present. They are
relentless and so diligent in their work and protection of the property. I
am just waiting for bear or mountain lion to appear, as they allegedly have been
seen in the area. Hope the fence and the Pyr bark would deter
them.
On the flip
side, our Newfoundland Osa, can sense deer being present before the Pyrs.
Once Osa senses them and seeks them out at the fence line, the Pyrs follow; but
the Newf ALWAYS knows the deer are there before the Pyrs. Not sure why
that is....any thoughts?
