  And if the Scout player takes one level of Officer (or vice versa) that

  Really?  I see the grunt or officer as the first to get killed.  Anyone 
carrying around a heavy weapon is a prime target in battle, and so are the 
leaders.  At least the scout is skulking around...

  True.  But there are various degrees of munchkin.  Heck, when I think of a 
character conception, I ask myself if the rules part of it is good enough so 
I won't die in the first session.  The rules are there to keep a 
relatively-equal playing field.  Otherwise, we'd all be playing diceless 
systems.
