[WW] Re: Various Points

Medals
I have always heard that the American army was much
more liberal with its medals than most others (“handed
out with the rations”) and that the British army was
particularly stingy in this regard – the men who
served on the Russian convoys are still trying to get
their efforts recognised with a campaign medal nearly
60 years on.
I don’t know much about the British, let alone anyone
else’s system but I suspect the table has been
drastically cut down otherwise it would fill a whole
page. A little research would allow anyone to produce
a much more complete version.
This is the sort of daft, wild goose chase I seem
particularly prone too so if it is a quiet day in work
tomorrow I will have a go.
To do a complete job you would need the different
awards for each service as well as country.
The nasty bit would be comparing the awards of
different nations – I can see a lot of howls of
protest.
This is starting to sound like a fun project.

System
Well I still don’t have either DL20 or BoTR but I
cannot see how the system could be worse than DL
Classic but this as is an intensely personal matter I
wont comment further. I think D&D^3 is an improvement
on AD&D^2 in that is uses a cohesive mechanism and did
not just “grow like Topsy”. The books look hideous
though.
I have one player whose reaction to snags in ANY game
system is “just use CoC”.

Canada
They were up to their necks in it, especially in
protecting the convoys. Interestingly the Canadians
also had the best APC of the war. Their Ram tank, with
the turret removed made an excellent APC – except that
the troops had to climb out – exposing themselves to
fire. This had about the same level of protection as
an M4 – unlike most modern APCs it offered the same
level of mobility and protection as the panzers.
Priest SPGs with their guns removed were also used as
APCs.
The Israelis produced a recent variation on the idea
using captured T-55 (I think) hulls but they had an
exit ramp.

Secret Societies
The Masons are as old as you want them to be. Are they
a Restoration club or the true inheritors of the
Templer secrets? It’s your call.
My personal idea would be to use them as a front
organisation of something much older. The Masons are
on the whole just what they seem but they exist to
provide cover and assistance (“who will help the poor
widow’s son”) if required to ‘the zeroth lodge’ or
whatever we call the real organisation.
The Nazis didn’t like them though – mind you the SS
were modelled on the Jesuits...
