Rather than having him as a deserter, how about having
his background represent his (or his family) having
left Germany in the late 30's. That way he may join
the British army as a recruit (a valued one if he's
already well trained) and thus join in on all the fun
while still maintaining the cultural and "local
knowledge" he'd have had as a deserter.

My concern, IHO, is that a deserter is automatically
suspect as a spy or Saboteur. Rather than recruit the
guy they'd instead throw him into a nice POW camp in
Canada somewhere.

Historically, I do remember a few pilots joined in the
Battle of Britian on the pom's side even though they'd
only freshly come over from Jerryland. So an exile
isn't entirely without merit as a character.

Cheers,
Mr. B
