	If your character served in the Far West, he was almost certainly part of
a cavalry regiment. Infantry simply doesn't have the mobility necessary to
sustain itself logistically in the vast open spaces west of the
Mississippi, so there, they invariably wind up on garrison duty--something
that doesn't suit your character's background at all.
	As for the exact regiment, in *DL* both South and North are doing their
Indian fighting with state troops, instead of the Regulars who carried out
this task in our history. Therefore, your character probably served in the
"x Colorado Cavalry Regiment", with x being a smallish number (e.g., 1st or
2nd), given CO's population.
