[DL] Seeking Sourcebook Reference

Hello,

A new player has joined my group and part of his
backstory includes a reference to a gang of horse
theives called 'The Black Hats.'  I could have sworn
that there is both a real life reference and a
Deadlands Setting reference for this gang.  I'm more
concerned with the setting reference than any real
life association.

If this gang does exist does anyone know what
sourcebook they are to be found in?
