Yup.

And they freed the slaves several months before they lost.  Making the 
South to be the first to truly and legally end slavery.


It sure as hell wasn't a popular decision, I will grant you that.  


BUT.  The majority of the Southerners were fighting for their own freedom, 
and their constitutional right to leave the Union, not to maintain 
the rich and easy lifestyle of a relative minority of landowners. And if 
you read the parts of the Constitution the Confederates were referring 
too, you'd see that they had a good case for succession.
