Re: [DL] Minor Relic: Eagle Feather (long)

That's funny, I don't remember giving him a minor relic. ;-)

Man Ben, you don't waste any time do you? (Last Friday was his first
Deadlands game.)

Subject: [DL] Minor Relic: Eagle Feather (long)

The minor relic Eagle Feather is listed on page 84 of Ghost Dancers.
It
states:

"The eagle feather is one of the most important and powerful
medicine
objects a shaman can own. All medicine ways except ghost medicine
are
considered favored when the feather is used in their rituals."

Does this mean that a character starting with Eagle Feather would be
able to
"learns" all favors (except ghost medicine ways) at one point each
as
described in Favored & Unfavored Medicines on page 57 of Ghost
Dancers?

Does this mean that all Appeasement spent on favors (except ghost)
are
doubled as if spent from the appropriate Guardian Spirit? (except
ghost)
regardless of the source of the appeasement (Shaman, Guardian
Spirit,
Associated Favor or Permanent Appeasement)?

Does this mean that if you had a Guardian Spirit and Eagle Feather
with
overlapping medicine way that points spent would be tripled in the
same
manner as Associating a Medicine Way on page 82 of Ghost Dancers?

Does this mean that if you had Eagle Feather and a blessed item with
Associated Medicine Way that overlapped that all Appeasement would
be
tripled?

I assume that if you had an item with Associated Medicine Way, Eagle
Feather
and Guardian Spirit that all overlapped that you still couldn't
quadruple
your Appeasement.

I have a couple of comments. Feel free to rip me to shreds as I have
tough
skin. =)
I have outlined 3 potential advantages to the Eagle Feather. The
first is
that you could possibly learn favors cheaply. The second is that you
could
double all points spent on Medicine Ways that aren't your Guardian
Spirits
associated way. The Third is that you could triple points spent on
Medicine
Ways that aren't your Guardian Spirits associated way by using the
Eagle
Feather in conjunction with a blessed item that was associated with
a
Medicine Way other than Ghost.

The wording of Eagle Feather seems to imply that it was intended to
provide
a benefit only when "used in their rituals." So my first thought was
that it
shouldn't allow you to learn favors cheaply. However, Guardian
Spirits do
let you learn favors cheaply and if you start the game with one,
they give
you a favored medicine way very similar to Eagle Feather. Next I
wondered
about the statement on page 49 of Ghost Dancers that states: "When
your hero
uses her guardian spirit's Appeasement points for it's associated
medicine's
favors, the points count double." So points are only doubled when
they are
spent from a guardian spirit. But if that negates doubling of points
when an
Eagle Feather is used without a guardian spirit, what is the point
of an
Eagle Feather in the first place?

Here is a proposed explanation that does not involve changing what
is
written. This may have been your intention all along and if it is,
my
apologies for wasting your time.

The Eagle Feather EXTENDS your Guardian Spirit's favored medicine
ways
status to all medicine ways except ghost. It does not cause overlap
with
your Guardian Spirit's present favored medicine way.

That still doesn't answer the question about learning the favors as
favored
medicine ways or not though.

Thanks,
Mydeadcow
