Re: [DL] Damn them Players

Looking for tricks of the trade.  Ways to trick players and make them feel like they have been had (well... just before they put a bullet into the bad guy).  Any stories or ideas are welcome.  My players are getting cocky and I want to throw one by them.

I am assuming by your mentioning the "players are getting cocky" that they have had some recent successes where they have killed all the bad guys rather easily, and now think of themselves as being able to take on anything and win. There are a couple different ways you can go here. One way is to put them up against something like a hanging judge where simply gunning the bad guy down doesn't do the trick. Have a monster that has a very specific weakness (can only be killed by poking it in the left eye with a sharp stick at midnight on a Thursday) so that they encounter it and their guns don't do anything to it. Either that or they *seem* to kill it, but it comes back fresh as a daisy the next night. This will force them to do some detective work to figure out what the weakness is. A haunted house or similar ghost story where there is more of a mystery to be solved than stuff to kill would also work fine.

Another option would be to have them run up against a *large* number of something... like a whole graveyard full of walkin dead, or something similar so that ammo starts to run out and the monsters just keep coming. You could also have a train or stagecoach they are riding in get attacked by a large number of bandits who think there is something extremely valuable on board, so they are willing to fight very hard to get it.

Lets see, other ideas... if the group has gotten a reputation, where stories about them and what they look like have had time to spread, have a group of bank robbers who try and disguise themselves to look like the party members. The next time they ride into a town, they find the bank recently robbed and the locals all shooting at them.

That's it for now. Hope this helped.
