I have watched many kendo matches and yes they do parry quite a bit with
their shinai.  Kendo is a sport derived from the traditional style of
Japanese sword fighting called Kenjutsu.  It was not used to train
samurai but was created as an alternative to Kenjutsu when killing your
opponent in casual society became taboo.
