I live in central Texas with the high humidity (not as bad as 
Houston though) but still won't shave my pyrs or newfs.  The only 
pyr I cut the coat short is Bianca, 11 yrs, arthritis, hates to sit for 
grooming anymore, well it gets uncomfortable for her to stand or sit 
long periods with arthritis, so it's easier to cut her coat short to 
make it manageable.   I also know quite a few newf owners down in 
Houston who don't clip newf coats either.  Either do well if you take 
the right precautions for them during the heat.
