Since Patric has brought up the "thinking/emotions" of dogs, may I
suggest reading "Dogs Never Lie About Love" by Jeffrey M. Masson.  I
suggest this often.  For some of us, simply living with them allows us to
understand they are creatures of emotion, that can affect behavior.  
Because we see it, and live with it , and can acknowledge it.  Others
live with a fear of anthropomorphism.  What ever one gets out of this 
book, it is usually helpful.   Cindy
