Re: [pyrnet] Pyrs as House dogs

All my dogs, Pyrs. included are house dogs. They are wonderful in the
house. Because of the extreme heat we have been having, they don't like
to be out long, and they tend to roughhouse more in the house right now,
to burn energy ( like the game of chase around the kitchen island,
dinette, and family room, I have mentioned ). Like kids confined. But
because basically they can be lethargic dogs even outside, they tend to
be well settled in the house. Cooler weather allows them more time
outside, and they will play more and run off their pent up energy out
there. Then they come in and flop. They are very happy as couch
potatoes when they are in the house. They are also wonderful full body
pillows. They love to be as close as possible to us watching T.V. at
night, and there are times you can't be seen for dogs snuggled up
against. This is especially true for when their " Daddy" is home at
night, and they miss him during the day.

That said, I think it does make a difference for any animal to have
companionship. I am home most of the time, or someone is, they really do
not spend much time confined in their pen or alone. But then I feel that
way about kids too.

I think if they are to be on their own a lot they might prefer a good
secure area where they can be part of the world and see a lot going on
visually. I think Pyrs. are as adaptable as any other breed, and I never
think of dogs as being indoor or outdoor breeds. I just think all dogs
need to be stimulated mentally, and when your home they need and deserve
a persons attention!

Mine are very clean as house dogs. I used to run the vacuum every day
before I had them, and I still do now to pick up white hair on teal
carpets. So their being in the house did not bother my housekeeping. I
keep a clean neat house, but I am not a fanatic.

Mine go out whenever, usually about every four hours, but of course they
are capable of going much longer than that.
Or more often if we are in and out watching them. I am not a big
believer in having any dog if your gone all the time ( why even have one?
), but I like the idea of pet day camps for dogs that are left, so they
socialize. After all, they are social beings, pack oriented! Or pet
sitters breaking up their day, or dropping them off with someone who is
home and can give them attention. All this is personal feelings though.
Hope this helps! Cindy. By the way, did you ever come up with any
breeder closer for those folks?
