Re: [pyrnet] teaching stay

Sorry to be late responding -- been a VERY busy week again.

Anyway -- this was a technique that we were taught to teach a dog to sit/down
stay.

Give the dog the command to sit or down and stay. While his attention is
focused on you, give him a small treat. Keep feeding him small treats until
you give the release command. Start out having him sit/down for a short
period of time, and work up to longer ones. One suggestion was to practice
this while, say watching TV, or any other time that you would be at one place
for a while. As he gets use to sitting or laying quietly, give less and less
treats -- substitute verbal praise for the edible type. This isn't a quick
solution, but it has worked on Baron and Kes.
