Hi Kati I don't know if this will help you but When I had to use the prong 
collar in OB class I hated it What I use to do was clip the lead on his 
regular collar too so that most of all he wouldnt feel the bite of the 
prongs but also like you have said they sometimes come apart.I live in Ny 
state but do keep both pyrs on heart worm all year long even with snow on 
the ground the mosquitoes will come out if the temp gets to around 50
