These dogs are pups. what you are seeing is puppy play. You're correct, he 
more than likely just does not know his own strength. I'd only give him 
supervised interaction with any of the other animals. To read an excellent 
article on starting LGDs to birds, go to www.lgd.org and click on the 
Library link. There is an article in there on how to acclimate dogs to 
guarding birds.
