I suspect there was a real reason for his guarding behavior. Since you live in the country it
could have been either animal or human predator. It was not paranoia, there was a reason..
coyotes, other wildlife predators, stray dogs,something.....
At a year and a half, he is just starting to really mature. So there may have been a bit of over
reaction, but by this age, listen to them. As he matures fully he will probably be a bit more
discerning and sure of himself.

I placed two adult LGD's with a home who have alpaca. They have made a good team and
coyote are the main predator. But just recently the owner called and said one day both of the
pyrs were completely wild. The alpaca were disturbed and stayed close to the pyrs. She
went out to check and could see a wolf down at the end of their road. When coyote come
around the male stays at the fence line where the coyotes are and the female patrols the
entire inside perimeter of the pasture. Their behavior when they sensed the wolf was
completely different.
