Personally, I think ranks make for great role-playing opportunities.  Though it really requires mature players.  The higher rank player needs to understand that they're not "in charge", they're responsible for the lives and well being of their people.  Also the lower ranking players need to not feel like their superior is better than them out of hand just because of thier rank. 
 
I agree with Sean, talking about it before hand is the best idea. Only Munchkins will have a problem with taking orders.

I'll throw out the first conversation, something that's come up in our group
a few times.

Since WW is a military game, one player inevitably outranks the others and is
in charge most of the time. How do you feel about that?
