The 45th Infantry was a National Guard unit from the American
Southwest, with a large complement of Indians. The 'swastika' was an
ancient Indian symbol for the sun. It was adopted by the 45th as a
symbol of courage and honor. Thanks to the Nazi adoption of the
swastika (for much the same reasons), the 45th changed their unit
symbol to a stylized eagle.
