I don't know about the tail coming off.  It was a "dive bomber" (2 x 250
pounders, 8x 20 pounders).  It was seriously underpowered and seems to have
been used a lot in an anti-submarine role or as a "machine gun post" (parked
on the airfield to protect other planes).  Its combat history confirms one
confirmed kill, a JU-88, shot down in 1940.
