After a surgery at the age of 10 years, I brought my doberman home just
after midnight because the vet was sure she was going to die before she
even fully came out of the anesthesia.  Well, I massaged her ears and
face for at least an hour and a half after I got her up on the bed.  To
make a long story short, she lived.  The Tellington Touch book is great
and there's even a snake in her book that received this therapy.
