I really do not know how you are
going to travel with five kids for that distance, but I have traveled with three
dogs in the summer. My car was a Saab hatchback and with the back seats
down they had two thirds of the car with blankets and toys. The dogs were
no more problem than they would be to go on an hour long trip. Once they
were loaded into the car and found their spots to lay down, they slept. We
stopped at rest stops for potty and snacks for them (which I had packed), and
for me (store bought on the way) as needed. I did leave them in the car
for a few minutes at a time while I had my break and got food, but since the AC
was running it was cool enough for a very quick trip. The tougher part was
for me to get some sleep. For that I pulled into the safest looking spot
in the rest area and got them to move over so I could stretch out
too. I left the windows down only about an inch for some
circulation. When I got too many paws or licks on my face to try to sleep
any longer, I got up and drove again. Sleeping in rest stops is illegal in
many areas and I was not very happy about it, but I could not drive straight
through and decided a nap was the lesser of the evils. You will probably
need to find kid and dog friendly motels on the way because while this works
with one adult and three dogs, I would not dare to try my method with
five kids even wioth no dogs..
For the final move into a new house
when the movers were coming as well as the new fence and the roofing contractor,
however, I left them all at their favorite kennel where they happily played in
air conditioning while us people struggled in the heat to get the house ready,
then I drove back to get them and bring them home.
