Dogs have a very powerful vomit reflex.  In short they throw up easily.
It's an hereditary "leftover" of the thing that keeps wild canines from
poisoning themselves with something they eat that is "dangerous".  I
wouldn't worry about vomiting as long as it is not accompanied by diareah,
or a fever, or it doesn't go on and on for more than a day.   I think that
you are right that he may have gotten too warm or exercised too much.  He
probably seemed logy from the same heat.

He's probably fine this morning.
